Matt Storer: Small Talk (PCF)

"Storer quickly drew the crowd in with warm musings and energetic audience interactions."

WA rising star Matt Storer clearly has a cult following within the Perth comedy scene. Playing to a solid Sunday night audience - despite sharing a time slot with one of the comedy festival's biggest draw cards just down the road - the audience were quickly abuzz.

Warmed up thanks to some dry-witted banter from Cameron McLaren of this year's Fringe breakout show 6056, Storer quickly drew the crowd in with warm musings and energetic audience interactions. While occasionally dropping in punchline-style comedy, Storer focused on lengthy, connected humour in a casual manner, making the night intimately funny - like a group of friends hilariously chatting over drinks. His talent won the crowd over incredibly quickly.

The dark horse talent for Matt, however, is his cabaret-style comedy on the keys, winding together tracks from audience suggestions (although initially and awkwardly misaligned at his sister), an ode to mindless banter, steaming through erectile dysfunction ballads and an incredibly unsexy Anglo-Saxon love tribute.

It's a shame to see the show gathering so much momentum throughout the night only to meet an uncharacteristic and abrupt end, though this may be due to the delayed starting time. Regardless, Storer showed his charisma and wit here with a performance that will continue to increase in room size at festivals to come.
