Live Review: Chris Loco ‘Ego’ Ft. Raye

After writing and producing for other artists, Londoner CHRIS LOCO has teamed up with 17-year-old singer/songwriter RAYE to create ‘Ego’, a saga of greed and lust.

Chris Loco has a track record for working with up and coming musical sensations, his breakthrough work involving the talent of an undiscovered Emeli Sande. Raye has had success on her own, including co-writing Blonde’s ‘All Cried Out’ before releasing her debut EP Welcome To The Winter.

The pair create a musical chemistry, having joined forces previously with Chris Loco co-writing and producing a couple of tracks on Raye’s debut EP. ‘Ego’ opens with a sound reminiscent of a church choir, before dropping into something that sounds a little like future R’n’B. Chris Loco creates a track filled with slow percussion, wared vocal synths and horn infused, electronic blurred, orchestral influenced lead.

Raye both wrote and performed the lyrics for ‘Ego’, and provides a powerful, feminine influence and attitude to the tune through a voice that as the feel of hip hop put through an electronic transformer. You could argue there is also a political undercurrent to the lyrics with lines such as “a sea of red, blue and white stripes” hinting at political egos, not just those encountered in relationships.

Chris Loco’s Debut EP See No Evil is due out in the coming months.
