"Leo is engaging, meticulous theatre."
Billed as a show that defies theatrical convention, Leo sets the bar of expectation high and proceeds to surpass it.
Leo is a one-man show that blends elements of physical theatre, comedy, mime, illusion and throws in a dash of sketching and animation for good measure. For the majority of the performance actor William Bonnett is on the floor. What makes this show special is the screen to his right that rotates the action 90 degrees clockwise; effectively tricking you into believing that gravity has warped.
Leo captures and engages the audience’s attention from the onset through two avenues: the plotline of a man discovering that the room he is in has an abnormal gravity; and through sheer curiosity. What, as the audience, do we focus on? Do we watch Bonnett execute each aspect of the scrupulously choreographed show to perfection, or do we watch the screen to the right of him that depicts what’s happening as we’d expect to see it?
From the first minute of the show you are hooked. You’re savvy with what’s happening on stage and yet you find yourself silently encouraging Leo along the path of discovery, urging him to ‘defy gravity’.
