Live Review: KLP

"I expect you to dance your ass off and turn the fuck up," KLP said.

More KLP More KLP

As soon as KLP began her set the cupcakes, Nautica polos and bangers ran deep. The Sydney DJ, producer and triple j House Party host mixed a two-hour birthday set that rolled commercial house and EDM chart-toppers one after another. Performing off the comet trails of Mel Lake (SA) and Minx, KLP packed Rocket Bar's dancefloor like a sardine tin and shook punters dry. "I expect you to dance your ass off and turn the fuck up," KLP said. After dropping songs like Because I'm Me by The Avalanches and Disclosure's When A Fire Starts To Burn, it was clear her musical choices weren't straying too far from the familiar.

You could even say that KLP's mix displayed a penchant for Australian sounds. Rufus' You Were Right made an appearance before Peking Duk was later added to the mix. But her tastes definitely expanded to the Berlin-born Claptone, with a feverish remix. No matter the region, it seemed KLP's choices were reciprocated by Snapchat vids and kids taking to the stage and giving her high-fives.

Did I say it was her birthday? Halfway through the set, KLP muted the decks and invited some friends - and one lucky punter - up on stage for a cupcake. When they all dove into the frosting, she then climactically dropped the bass. If you missed out on a sweet treat, there were also her branded T-shirts, which were hurled around the room, up-for-grabs. Soundtracked by catchy numbers like Oliver $ & Jimi Jules' Pushing On, the crowd fought for the coveted threads.

Overall, the Sydneysider exploited the talents garnered through years of experience. She mixed a selection of thumping vocal-led tracks to a crowd that hung onto each song as if their feet depended on it.
