"The album delivers catchy riffs and quirky lyrics."
We were promised more Grouplove after the release of their single Welcome To Your Life earlier this year, and the album delivers catchy riffs and quirky lyrics to satiate a thirst for summer anthems. Cannonball is slightly choral and moves the band in a different direction, arriving at concepts which are peppered throughout the album but not fully explored. However, it is quite intriguing to wonder about how these tunes may translate to a live performance, and the latest directions from the American indie-rockers is sure to land them on the summer festival circuits.
Highlights are Standing In The Sun and Heart Of Mine, with their alternative beats and the exaggerated use of acoustic guitar. Hannah Hooper's vocals make more of an appearance this time around, which work surprisingly well with lead singer Christian Zucconi's. The lyrics are quirky and full of sunshine, reminiscent of past loves and heartbreak. It's relatable, it's easy to digest, it's tracks that you'll learn the words to in no time.
While it would have been great to watch the band experiment in a more fleshed-out way, the comfort of these tracks means that in the sometimes over-saturated indie scene we can go back to our roots and find new classics to boogie to.
Grouplove have always had the unmistakeable quality of being... well, Grouplove. Their unique indie-drone is the happy-go-lucky kind that sets hearts flying, and their latest effort is a 'big mess' of indie-pop. And it works.
