An eclectic combination of local acts, but this month’s selection was exceptionally peculiar.

Gignition at The Railway Hotel is always guaranteed to provide an eclectic combination of local acts, but this month’s selection was exceptionally peculiar.

Getting the show started was the Perth-based 4 Months In. Self-labeled as dirty rock, they provided a short set of catchy beats that had the audience’s feet tapping. Unfortunately they had to cut their set short after 15 minutes when their drummer, Rusty Harris, injured a tendon in his wrist.

Next to grace the stage was well known outfit Apollo’s Attic and they did not disappoint, captivating the crowd with their eccentric mix of bizarre guitar effects, haunting vocals and otherworldly riffs. They have an uncanny ability to provide an experience that leaves the audience feeling like they have just had an extra-terrestrial encounter on a Caribbean island. Their lyrics are beautifully simplistic, providing smooth, sensual harmonies with powerful imagery leaving the audience with a contradictory combination of melancholy and happiness.

Rounding out the night was two-piece ensemble Powderworks. They introduced themselves simply as, “We are Powderworks and we play rock and roll!” launching straight into a high energy set incorporating a blend of old school rock’n’roll and punk rock. They displayed a true love for the spotlight, putting on an old-fashioned punk rock show complete with high-pitched screams, knee-high jumps and rock star slides. Their drummer and vocalist astounded the audience with his effortless speed and rhythm while lead guitarist and vocalist mesmerised the crowd with his onstage antics. Once again, Gignition proves to be an excellent sample of Perth talent.
