"Our host asks us if we're comfortable wearing handcuffs."
Last year's fringe added a new category - "interactive" - and it was made specifically for outings like this one. Before we begin, our host asks us if we're comfortable wearing handcuffs and then leads us to a replica jail. Sitting in adjacent cells, we're cuffed to our beds and told to examine our surroundings, which hold the clue to freeing ourselves.
Explaining too much more would take away from the surprise, but the aim is to escape from jail by solving a series of puzzles. It may not be everyone's idea of fun, but for keen problem solvers it's an unexpectedly immersive experience.
Some of the puzzles are a little repetitive, but we're soon shouting suggestions and looking anxiously at the clock as the next 59 minutes race by. We know we can go home whether we make it out or not, but it still seems vitally important to beat the clock. When the final door swings open with seconds to spare we're grinning widely.
This is definitely not for idle spectators - if you sign up for Gaol Break, you'd better be prepared to throw yourself into it, but if you do it's a thrilling experience.
