Who’s Playing Splendour In The Grass 2013?

What we know, what we think and what we want.

More Splendour In The Grass More Splendour In The Grass

One of the biggest announcements of the festival year is upon us this Wednesday morning as the bands making up the line up for the 2013 instalment of Splendour In The Grass is revealed.

Of course some bands just can't keep a secret, so there have been a few little leaks of late, so we thought we'd put together what we know and what we think we know just so you can abuse us on Wednesday morning when we're completely wrong.

For the record, that Bob Dylan rumour is not going to happen as he is on the road with Wilco, Richard Thompson and My Morning Jacket over the Splendour weekend.

JAMES BLAKE

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

The dude told us so himself in an interview with Bryget Chrisfield a few weeks back.

COLD WAR KIDS

Our man Ben Preece was chatting with bassist Matt Maust for a feature recently and this is what happened:

Preece: And are you heading back down to Australia any time soon?
Maust:  Yeah we're definitely coming back, I think it's June or July?
Preece:  Excellent to hear, you'd be doing Splendour in the Grass then?
Maust:  That's the one we're doing yeah!  Not sure if I'm supposed to say that.

Well, you did.

WAVVES

He told Sam Gill from Naysayer & Gilsun that they would be out for the festival this year.

THE POLYPHONIC SPREE

Twitter, you beautiful bastard.

THE NATIONAL

It was in an interview with triple j Magazine that Matt Berninger apparently let it slip that they would be out here for Splendour.

Then there's the shit we have no real evidence for…

ALT-J

Look at those tour dates.

CHVRCHES

We'll say it again. Look at those tour dates. No Brisbane show is a telling sign as well.

THE CURE

They've been announced for Fuji Rock, which doesn't mean as much as people seem to think it does, but the rumour mill on this one has gone into overdrive. They play the Sunday of Fuji, so would have to play a Friday night set if they were to come at all.

YOU AM I

There is a seemingly good relationship between the band and the festival and they're out on the road doing their two best albums in full so we're pretty much happy to lock them in.

FRANK OCEAN

There must be someone throwing suitcases full of money at Mr Ocean to secure his first Aussie dates where he actually shows up. Splendour would be a great fit for him. John Denison reckons so too.

BIG BOI

Reckons he's coming out in July.

We reckon a tour would've been announced by now if it wasn't a Splendour related visit. But what do we know?

HAIM

If they're not already stitched up for Laneway (though there's no reason they can't do both, we guess) we're going to suggest they're a slight possibility for a trip to the Byron shire.

OF MONSTERS & MEN

Speaking of Laneway, these dudes were massive at that festival earlier this year, have been all over the radio for months, are playing Fuji Rock and have a sound that's almost tailor made for Splendour. We'd throw a dollar on them being on the bill if we had any money.

CLOUD NOTHINGS

The most talked about rock band of Laneway this year. They'll return eventually, but will it be sooner rather than later?

FLUME

Why not?

BERNARD FANNING

Even though his old band headlined the first ever Splendour and he has had a very strong involvement in the event, Bernard Fanning at Splendour doesn't really fit. That doesn't mean it won't happen though.

MUMFORD & SONS

Dew Process' favourite sons. Guaranteed crowd puller, playing Fuji Rock and Splendour alumni.

AIRBORNE

They told The Ms they'd probably be hitting it.

VIDEO RODNEY

Something of a longshot given that they're not a real band and were only featured in the poorly received 1990 film Heaven Tonight. Also, if Guy Pearce were to appear on the festival bill we're guessing we'd have more chance of seeing him reprise his Priscilla role.

Make sure you're checking theMusic.com.au when the Splendour announcement drops on Wednesday morning!
