‘We Were Closed Without Notice’: Famous Sydney Venue Shuts Its Doors

"It's a tough gig."

One of the country’s most beloved live music spaces has shut its door.

Captain Cook Hotel, which has hosted gigs from local acts such as Bad//Dreems, WAAX, Hey Geronimo and more, and was the venue of choice for Green Day’s secret Soundwave sideshow back in 2014, has “sailed into port for the last time”.

“After an unsuccessful and drawn out sale process, the Hotel was closed,” a statement from the venue reads.

“Negative stadium media, non-support of the live music model and our lack of priority of the Pokies - sunk the ship. Whilst negotiating better terms with the landlord we were closed without notice.”

“Whilst we’ve had big bands here etc. it’s been the ground level bands and performers coming through that made it worthwhile. Unfortunately - the Pokies have won again.”

As a result, Captain Cook Hotel has been forced to cancel all upcoming gigs.
