What happens when you go past eleven? 41 years after the iconic rock mockumentary film, This Is Spinal Tap, was released, its sequel is finally arriving.

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues will land in cinemas on Thursday, 25 September. The highly anticipated trailer, released this morning (25 July), can be viewed below.

The trailer, introduced by director Rob Reiner, who portrays documentarian Marty DiBergi in the original film, finds the fictional comedy rockers preparing for their final reunion concert. They appear in a discussion with Paul McCartney and Questlove, and perform with Elton John at the end of the trailer.

The band members, David St. Hubbins (portrayed by Michael McKean), Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) are placed firmly in the modern day, making jokes about Stormy Daniels, references to cryptocurrency, and, of course, the admission that eleven of their drummers have died.

You can watch the trailer below.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Paul McCartney, Questlove, and Elton John aren’t the only superstars who will appear in the forthcoming film. Additional special guests listed to appear include country royalty Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, and Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich.

The development of the sequel was first announced in May 2022. In November 2023, Reiner announced that Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks were set to make cameo appearances as themselves.

There will be no better way to hype oneself up for the return of Spinal Tap’s hijinks than to witness the original mockumentary masterpiece on the big screen, which returns to cinemas in celebration of its 41st anniversary on Thursday, 7 August.

Last year, Reiner said of the return of Spinal Tap, “I recently spoke to Marty DiBergi, who said that he was more than happy to take a sabbatical from his position as a visiting Professor’s Assistant at the Ed Wood School of Cinematic Arts to once again document Spinal Tap to ensure their place in the pantheon of Rock and Roll.”
