This Is Spinal Tap Returns To The Big Screen For 41st Anniversary

Cinephiles and music-lovers alike better line up to purchase their cinema tickets, as This is Spinal Tap - remixed and remastered - is returning to the big screen for a limited run in celebration of its forty-first anniversary and upcoming sequel.

Often touted as one of the greatest mockumentaries of all time, this cult classic directed by Rob Reiner follows members of the fictional English heavy metal band Spinal Tap, played by Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, on what proves to be a disastrous tour of the United States.

Poking fun at the pretensions of rock bands and rock documentaries, the Reiner film, first released in 1984, has a lively and impassioned fan base.

The sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, is scheduled for release in September 2025. This follow-up will see Rob Reiner return to his place in the director’s chair, and will see Guest, McKean, and Shearer reprising their roles as members of Spinal Tap reuniting for one final concert.

The development of the sequel was first announced in May 2022. In November 2023, Reiner announced that icons such as Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks were set to make cameo appearances as themselves.

There will be no better way to hype oneself up for the return of Spinal Tap’s hijinks than to witness the original mockumentary masterpiece on the big screen. Additionally, the anniversary release will include a special message from filmmaker (and movie character) Marty DiBergi, as well as an exclusive sneak peek at Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

The remixed and remastered This Is Spinal Tap is showing in cinemas from 7 August 2025.
