How A Single Venue Has Changed Clubbing Forever

Manchester's The Warehouse Project has proven to become a true benchmark of global club spaces, defining itself as the high bar for what a great party can be.

The venue, alongside Mixmag have released a documentary showcasing it's longevity and move to Depot Mayfield from Store Street. It depicts the key moments that have defined the venue and the dance music scene of Manchester throughout its 17 year history. 

The Warehouse Project has developed a reputation for bringing in some of the biggest dance acts in the world. It's hosted almost everyone you can name, with headline sets from the likes of Eric Prydz and Peggy Gou, all the way to bass heavyweights Skrillex and Flume. 

The documentary showcases the venues move in 2018 to its now monster capacity space home Depot Mayfield and its first party there. It features interviews from founders Sam Kandel and Sacha Lord as well as artist features from Hot Since 82, Bonobo, Annie Mac and many more. 

The documentary was created by Ben Carey of YoungOnes production studio. In a statement to Mixmag he reflected on the venue's journey as well as documenting it, "I went in to see what they created and it was kind of crazy. The guys running it, they’re clubbers and they feel like they’re part of the fans. It doesn’t intend to be around forever. It is meant to represent a moment in time. People should appreciate it while they can.”

Carey wanted to create a film that represented all stakeholders in the venue from people, DJs and punters and how they reflect its ethos. The doco covers everything from the design of the venue's logo to its poster graphic designs all the way to its highly esteemed line up curation.

On what Carey wants people to take away from the film he stated, "For people who have been to WHP, It should finally tell the story.

"I guess for the people who haven’t been there before, I hope it gets them up to Manchester! In terms of clubbing, it is definitely one of the best experiences you’ll get in this country — and it’s up there with the greats of Europe. Especially at Depot Mayfield!"
