"Lifetime has always been a brand that champions women’s stories."
US channel Lifetime has said it will go ahead with airing its Surviving R Kelly documentary series, despite threats of legal action from R Kelly's team.
As reported by The Muse, the six-part series, which premieres in the US today, will go ahead despite the musician's lawyer Brian Nix reportedly sending Lifetime a letter suggesting that the "documentary contains lies and that he will file a federal lawsuit if the network doesn’t cancel the premiere"
The channel has since responded saying they will continue and that, "Lifetime has always been a brand that champions women’s stories."
The documentary will address alleged sexual misconduct and claims surrounding Kelly, and will feature "interviews with several of Kelly’s accusers, people formerly in his inner circle, journalists, and even his own family members."
The 51-year-old singer publicly denied shocking allegations in 2017 that he was housing six women against their will and controlling their lives. He has also previously settled a dozen civil lawsuits out of court that alleged "illegal sexual relationships". In 2008, he was acquitted on 14 counts of making child pornography.
Last month, a "fake" Australian tour was announced for Kelly for 2019. Read the story here.
