The Workers Club Is Getting A Spin-Off In Geelong

23 January 2015 | 12:36 pm | Staff Writer

The new digs are set to open in March

Renowned Melburnian venue The Workers Club has joined forces with Geelong-based bookers Spinning Half to give the city's live music landscape a shot in the arm with the impending opening of The Workers Club Geelong this March.

The new venue is located at 90-92 Little Malop Street, and promises to offer "top-notch" live music experiences for both artist and punter alike. The pedigree behind the new digs is certainly impressive — the Melbourne Workers Club has hosted more than 1000 gigs in its lifetime for a wide spectrum of artists, while Spinning Half have had their fingerprints on more than 500 local and international gigs around Geelong. In fact, before the place even has a concrete opening date, more than 30 artists have signed on to play, the first of whom is set to be revealed today.

In addition, The Workers Club Geelong will be decked out with a stomach-sating kitchen, though the style of edibles on offer remain a closely guarded secret at the moment — other than the fact there will be "no parmies" (nor cover bands, nightclub DJs or TV — but all Cats games will be shown on a projector).

After last year's APRA postcode rankings showed Geelong to be the city boasting the nation's highest percentage growth of royalty earnings in almost a decade, the location of the new venue seems a no-brainer, with Workers Club Melbourne co-owner John O'Brien explaining: "The regional scene is alive and well but in need of genuine live original music venues who can facilitate this positive growth. It is more than a manufacturing hub and there is a cultural scene down here that is about to explode."
