More The Whitlams The Whitlams

If there’s one thing that these past three decades of music have proven, it’s that more shows from The Whitlams is always received better than less.

That’s exactly the case for the venerated Aussie icons who have recently announced a second show with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Originally planned as a one-off performance at Naarm/Melbourne’s Hamer Hall on Saturday, September 6th, the retrospective show is set to see the MSO share centre stage with The Whitlams, offering up a wide palate of styles across the career-spanning set.

However, with pre-sales for the initial show going live last week to a massive response from the band’s voracious fanbase, they’ve doubled your pleasure by adding a second show to the itinerary.

Launching one night earlier than first planned, The Whitlams will now be taking part in a two-night affair with the MSO, with the second date set to kick off their brief residency on Friday, September 5th.

Longtime fans of The Whitlams would undeniably know that the band are no strangers to adding an orchestral flair to their celebrated discography. After all, back in 2004, they became the first Aussie indie band to perform with the country’s finest orchestras, and in the years since, they’ve ensured that the concept doesn’t remain a fond memory.

The band’s last three visits to Melbourne have been sellout standing shows at The Forum, The Northcote Theatre, and a four-night run at The Corner Hotel, though upcoming performance will be their first seated concert since their 25th anniversary tour in 2017, where they also performed at Hamer Hall with the MSO.

"Once every seven years we get to perform in the middle of the beautiful storm of an 80-piece orchestra,” Freedman explains. “This time it's with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Australia's best sounding room, Hamer Hall. I'm counting down the days to what will be a really memorable evening."

Tickets to both of The Whitlams’ upcoming shows with the MSO are on sale now.
