In long overdue news, The Angels will receive a laneway named after them in Adelaide next year.

The project, which was approved by the council six years ago and is due to be placed in the west end in 2025, is finally coming to life. The Angels Lane also arrives as Adelaide celebrates its tenth year as a UNESCO City of Music.

The legendary Adelaide rockers join impressive company with artists who have already received music laneways in Adelaide, including Sia (Sia Furler Lane), Cold Chisel (Cold Chisel Lane), Paul Kelly (Paul Kelly Lane), and No Fixed Address (No Fixed Address Lane).

The Angels, known for hits including Shadow Boxer, No Secrets, Am I Ever Gonna See You Again, Marseilles, and many more, have found local and international acclaim throughout their 50-year career. They have been cited as an influence by American bands Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam.

This year, The Angels have celebrated their 50th anniversary, announcing a tour in honour of the milestone. They also released their first album in ten years, Ninety Nine.

South Australian publication In Daily reports that The Angels Lane has been proposed to be a private lane that runs between Rosina Street and Morphett Street, behind the Currie Street campus of TAFE SA.

In Daily reports that the laneway is set to align with Hindley Street upgrades, such as connecting new public toilets and working to make the space safer and more vibrant.

Councillor David Elliott said, “That’s why I’m excited about this, not just about how it fits into improving the public sector and the improvement in that space, there’s something in this that could actually make this a rather important laneway for people to move through.”

In addition to the announcement that The Angels will receive their own laneway as part of the City of Music Laneway project, there will also be some artwork on The Angels Lane.

While the proposed artwork hasn’t been designed yet, the Angels Lane project has been allocated approximately $60,700 in the council’s budget for the laneway. This covers the costs of signage, public artwork, the plaque, and a launch event to celebrate.
