Taylor Swift has issued a response to the reviews of her just-released new album, The Life Of A Showgirl, stating that she isn’t “the art police.”

The Blank Space singer’s new album hasn’t exactly received the best reviews. On music aggregate and community website Album of the Year, it has a critic rating of 61/100, while its users—everyday music fans sharing their own reviews—rank it even lower, at 44/100. At the time of publication, it’s currently the lowest-rated album in Swift’s entire discography.

However, Swift doesn’t seem to be overly concerned by the early reviews and believes that the album will gain more appreciation as time passes.

“I have a lot of respect for people’s subjective opinions on art. I’m not the art police,” Swift commented in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “It’s like, everybody is allowed to feel exactly how they want. And what our goal is as entertainers is to be a mirror.”

She added, “And what I often love seeing my fans say is, ‘I used to be someone who didn’t relate to reputation. And now that I’ve been through some other things in my life, that’s my favourite album.’ Or, ‘I used to be a Fearless girlie, now I’m obsessed with evermore.’

“We’re doing this thing for keeps. I have such an eye on legacy when I’m making my music. I know what I made. I know I adore it, and I know that on the theme of what the Showgirl is, all of this is part of it.”

This week, The Music’s Christie Eliezer reported that Swift’s The Official Release Party Of A Showgirl cinematic experience is already in the top five-grossing movies of all time.

Interestingly, The Official Release Party Of A Showgirl had no proper advance promotion. The news of its release arrived two weeks prior, primarily through Swift’s social media channels, which reach 560.6 million followers.

However, it did have the excitement of the album, which broke Spotify’s 2025 single-day streaming record in under 11 hours. It was also the most pre-saved album in Spotify history, which the streaming service reported “surpassed 6 million pre-saves and broke the record previously held by [Swift’s] The Tortured Poets Department.”
