“For a place so tiny, the surrounding community has made such a big impact on the independent Australian music scene.“

Intimate Marrickville live music space The Newsagency has announced its closure.

With the venue hosting its final show last week, owner-operator Alison Avron posted a statement to Facebook, citing lease issues.

“My lease is up in July and my landlord doesn't want me to renovate so I gotta go elsewhere,” Avron said, with the Newsagency website currently reading “closed until further notice”.

Billed as “Sydney’s tiniest live music venue”, The Newsagency opened five-and-a-half years ago.

“It hasn't been easy at times but I have poured every ounce of love and passion I could possibly muster even through adversity,” Avron said.

“It's hard for me to express just how grateful I am to the artists and audiences who have latched onto this space and made it their own.

Back in January, beloved Sydney live music venue Newtown Social Club announced it would be leaving the live music scene later this month.
