Gold Coast Music Network has announced a partnership with the music wellbeing foundation Support Act to bring free First Nations Mental Health First Aid to the Gold Coast.

The workshop, which will run for five hours on Tuesday, October 1st, at Miami Marketta, is aimed specifically at those working in the music industry.

The course, which is one of many of Support Act’s available services, aims to provide vital training for participants to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults experiencing mental health challenges, whether it be inside or outside of creative pursuits.

Developed in consultation with First Nations people, the strengths-based course emphasizes cultural safety and social-emotional well-being.

Participants will learn to identify signs and symptoms of common mental health issues, recognise crises, and understand the available support systems. The training equips attendees with practical, evidence-based strategies for approaching and conversing with individuals in distress, encouraging them to seek professional help and community support in a culturally safe and informed way.

Completing the course grants participants the title of Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider), which is recognised nationally for three years before renewal.

The training, normally valued at $330, is offered free to music industry professionals, emphasising Support Act's commitment to raising the standard of ethical practices in the music industry.

Along with the course, Support Act also has a First Nations support line available via 1800 959 500, where individuals can have a judgement-free chat with an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander counsellor or a counsellor with cultural awareness training. Crisis Relief support is also available for First Nations creatives facing financial hardship due to a crisis.

Spaces for the First Aid course are limited, and individuals are encouraged to register quickly.
