A New York artist has started chronicling the "invisible conversation" between contemporary hip hop and pre-16th-century artworks
While the internet has been in thrall for years over the idea that maybe Keanu Reeves has been alive for several hundred years because he totally appears in vintage art, New York City-based creative entrepreneur Cecilia Azcarate may have stumbled onto a far greater, less-recognised connection: that between the world of contemporary hip hop and our medieval artists.
On recently established Tumblr B4-XVI, Azcarate posts modern hip hop artworks — album covers, press photos, fortunately timed snaps, that sort of thing — juxtaposed against art sourced from the years preceding the 16th century (hence "before 16"). As she describes it, it's a highlighting of "an invisible conversation" between the two but, after seeing this pics, we think you'll agree that she's doing much to help that conversation become much less invisible.
Take a scroll through some samples below; we've got to say, it's pretty compelling. All pics via Azcarate's B4-XVI Tumblr. Click here to see the full selection.
