"They told us we needed an American sound, an American producer, an American look and we should move to America. Yeah right."

More Spiderbait More Spiderbait

With Spiderbait on the road at the moment to celebrate 20 years (last year, mind you) of their seminal Ivy & The Big Apples record, we asked the band to take a trip down memory lane with us.

The band visit the '90s and early 2000s in these vintage film photos, telling us what they remember about that particular moment, including visits to CBGB's, Canada and Abbey Road.

All photos provided by Spiderbait.

Somewhere in central NSW probably around 1995.  Driving to Queensland on tour. Endless driving in those days… Whitt’s panel van was called Bob the HQ.

Main street of Banff on tour in Canada 1996, in the middle of recording Ivy. It was Elk rutting season. There were warning signs about not approaching the randy Elks.

Rottnest island around 2002. We love bikes and quokkas.

Whitt in New York City 1996 top of the Empire State Building when the Twin Towers still existed. We all love a bit of tourist action. We played at CBGB’s in the Bowery district and at some venue in Soho on Houston St.

Los Angeles 1996 at The Viper Room. We drove the whole west coast this trip. Ivy & The Big Apples came out at about this time and we went to see some bigwigs in LA who wanted to make us stars. They told us we needed an American sound, an American producer, an American look and we should move to America. Yeah right.

Hobart on a Tumbleweed gig 1994, we think. Relaxing with a cuppa tea and looking at the snow on Mt Wellington.

The pilgrimage to Abbey Road that every Beatles fan must do. There’s not much to see there really except a zebra crossing with lots of other idiots getting their photo taken too.

Could be Japan, could be Seattle.  Could be 1997, 1998. It’s in a photo booth, that's the only thing we can be sure of.
