The West Australian ensemble are taking their new baby out on the road
West Australian indie joy-mongers Salary have unveiled the release date for their forthcoming debut full-length, Upside Down Island, complementing the news with a pair of launch shows on the west and east coasts.
Due to land next month, Upside Down Island is a 12-track journey of "existential musings, rich in melody and epic, sparse arrangements", beautifully realised with the help of mix-master Naomune Anzai (Kim Salmon & The Surrealists, NO ZU).
The band's expansive soundscapes — not unjustly compared with the likes of Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene and others, are typified in recent single Beyond, a gorgeous and atmospheric slow-burn that pulls the listener into its voluminous soundscape and refuses to let go as it builds towards its horn-laden, harmony-soaked climax.
The wider album traverses themes, in the words of frontman Sean Gorman, "...about friends, family and trying to define a sense of place of time".

"They're about me and the people around me and the weird, amazing scary world," he said in a statement.
The band will be performing four launch shows to support the record around its release: three in Melbourne — at Tago Mago, The Old Bar and Yarra Hotel — and one in Fremantle (at the Odd Fellow).
They'll be joined by a rotating cast of mates for the trio of Victorian shows: Tough Uncle, S.A.S and Pselodux on night one, Under The Cut on night two and LoVision, Symmetrix and more for their final Melbourne outing. Supports are as-yet unrevealed for their tour-capper in Freo.
Upside Down Island will be released digitally and on limited-edition 12" vinyl on Friday 20 May via Bandcamp and all good streaming outlets.
