Rivers Cuomo Reveals Weezer Are Making Their Own Movie

After joining the Coachella line up as late additions, veteran Los Angeles rockers Weezer used their recent appearance to announce that a band movie is on the way.

The group were added to the bill earlier this month alongside Ed Sheeran following the news that FKA twigs, Anitta, and Gel had all been scratched from the final roster. Notably, Weezer’s appearance was mired in controversy after reports that bassist Scott Shriner’s wife was arrested on the charge of attempted murder.

However, the band’s appearance at the festival went off without a hitch, with the group performing a a 12-song set that didn’t extend beyond their 2008 material. However, just before launching into Undone - The Sweater Song, frontman Rivers Cuomo told fans they’d been a little preoccupied in the world of motion pictures.

“We’ve been busy making the Weezer movie back in LA the last couple weeks,” he explained. “But when Coachella called us up, said, ‘Hey Weezer, could you guys make it out for a surprise appearance?,’ we’re like, ‘Heck yeah!’ It feels so good to be here with you guys and let out these emotions.”

Additionally, unofficial fifth Weezer member Karl Koch recently contacted the group’s fan club to reveal the band are “doing a private filmed merchandise signing for a select few fans, for a TBA video.”

As part of the process, “all selected participants will need to sign a release and NDA prior to arriving,” while “no photography will be allowed.” Specific details were said to be forthcoming, with a shoot date of April 21st being noted.

Alongside this, fans on X (formerly) Twitter also noted that a 'notice of filming' had gone up in Los Angeles recently, alerting fans of a scripted feature film to be shot from April 7th – 9th, with the project (titled Weezer: Security Threat) featuring a number of special effects, including "simulated bullet effects," "atmospheric smoke," and more.

Currently, no further details related to the film have been revealed, though information will ostensibly arrive in the coming months once filming is completed.
