Coldplay fans who attended the band’s second Melbourne show on Thursday night (31 October) were met with a shock when actor Ralph Macchio joined them on stage for a performance of The Karate Kid.
A bonus track from their latest album, Moon Music, singer Chris Martin teased the audience that he was losing his voice and needed some help, inviting the Karate Kid and Cobra Kai star himself to perform the titular song for his character.
While fans of Macchio’s character in The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai (Daniel LaRusso) might have been waiting to find out if he actually can sing, the performance featured a pre-recorded Chris Martin vocal as the actor lip-synched his way through the song. It’s a bit of fun and something random for the audience, right?
In addition to the surprise performance, Macchio has been in Melbourne filming what some fans on TikTok believe to be the music video for The Karate Kid, with the actor appearing at the State Library of Victoria earlier in the day.
Check out the on-stage moment below.
Coldplay being joined by Ralph Macchio follows news made on their first night of the Music Of The Spheres tour in Australia, where, for the first time in their career, they weren’t joined by bassist Guy Berryman on stage as he was sick.

In a live review of the band’s first show at Marvel Stadium this week (30 October), The Music’s Michael Prebeg said, “Coldplay kick off their Australian tour for the first time ever without their bass guitar player, Guy Berryman, but they still deliver a show that’s out of this world.”
Also on the first two nights in Melbourne, Coldplay were joined by local R&B singer PANIA for a performance of WE PRAY.
“It was an incredible and surreal experience to perform with Coldplay in my hometown in front of so many people!” PANIA said of the experience on Thursday. “Chris and the band were so nice and made me feel really welcome.
“I tried not to think too much about it because I was nervous but looking back on the footage I saw of him and I performing in front of his piano was so crazy to me!! I’m doing it again tonight so am going to try and take in the moment.”
Coldplay will perform at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium tonight and tomorrow night, and will head to Sydney next week.
