Queensland Theatre Company Has Unveiled Its 2020 Program

Queensland Theatre Company revealed its 2020 season last night, the last season from outgoing artistic director Sam Strong. It features works from celebrated Aussie playwright David Williamson, the Brissie premiere of new play Prima Facie, and the previously announced adaptation of best-selling novel Boy Swallows Universe. 

The 50th anniversary season season is made up of eight plays, including four new Australian works, four plays written by women, and five plays directed by women.

Emerald City by David Williamson, a co-production with MTC, opens the season, the story of a couple moving to the decadent Sydney of the 1980s, with a cast featuring Rhys Muldoon.  

Aussie writer Glace Chase explores gender and sexuality in the New York of the 2020s with STC co-production Triple X. She also stars, alongside Josh McConville and Contessa Treffone.  

QTC give Shakespeare's Othello an Australian twist, setting the tragedy in the Torres Strait during WWII, with Othello the captain of the only First Nations Australia battalion in the Australian army's history. 

Queensland Premier's Drama Award-winning family comedy-drama The Holidays premieres at QTC, a story of travel in the Sunshine State, combining live performance music and projections. 

Inspired by the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, UK writer Lucy Kirkwood's The Children examines what life would look like in the wake of a nuclear disaster. 

As previously announced, Boy Swallows Universe, the bestselling semi-autobiographical novel from Trent Dalton, is adapted for the stage by Tim McGarry as part of Brisbane Festival. 

Prima Facie is a deeply moving, award-winning one-woman play about sexual assault and the legal system, starring Sheridan Harbridge, which comes to Brisbane straight from Sydney's Griffin 2019 season. 

Queensland Theatre Company close their 2020 season with Greek myth of Phaedra transplanted to a Queensland that has seceded from Australia.
