Miss Kaninna produced the BLACKPRINT mixtape alongside Lucy Blomkamp (Mallrat, 6lack) and Nikodimos (Hiatus Kaiyote, Genesis Owusu). It’s a record made up of freestyles that gradually evolved into songs, born of performing in front of ravenous crowds ready to see Amyl and the Sniffers, KNEECAP, and De La Soul.
The mixtape is home to the singles MOB TIES and HANDOUT ft. Jamahl Yami. The latter was released today. Miss Kaninna said of her new track:
HANDOUT looks at themes of privilege of white “Australia”, it’s about black power and reclaiming identity and rage, especially with the double standards of crime and prosecution in so-called “Australia”.
I make music based off how the song is supposed to be and the song developed in an organic way, which - art based on a feeling and if it becomes a single, that’s a bonus.
I’ve been wanting to make a track with my brother Jamahl (Yami) since I met him 3.5 years ago. Jamahl is like my older brother and would tag along to all the stuff he was going to when I first moved to Melbourne and we were jamming and making a lot of music together and we were finally presented with an opportunity to work together on my project - Jamahl’s voice and cadence leant itself to the first verse and the rest is history.
I knew he belonged on this because of how much he’s supported me so far. Nikodimos is an incredible producer and musician, I had been working with him for a couple of weeks getting to know him, to see what kind of music he could make for me and my people; he was picking up all sorts of instruments throughout the sessions.
