Australian indie rockers Middle Kids have contributed to a tribute album for Canadian band Broken Social Scene.

The album, ANTHEMS: A Celebration of Broken Social Scene’s You Forgot It In People, will be released next Friday (6 June), but ahead of the release, you can enjoy a taste of the album with Middle Kids’ spin on Cause = Time.

Led by the banjo and swelling strings, singer Hannah Joy follows the tender groove. Bassist, engineer, and producer Tim Fitz provides warmth and joy to the cover, while drummer Harry Day leads the beat.

Middle Kids said of having the opportunity to honour Broken Social Scene, “HI we’ve come out of hiding to gift you our cover of @brokensocialscene ‘Cause = Time’, available everywhere now!

“It was very surreal to be asked to record this version. BSS are one of the all-time influences for our band, and particularly the album You Forgot It In People. Everything on that record is beautiful and raw, spontaneous and alive, intentional and self-assured. There is a lot of love in the music. There is a lot of love in us towards Broken Social Scene.”

In other Middle Kids news, the band were recently nominated for Song of the Year for Dramamine at this year’s APRA Awards (which was won by Amyl And The Sniffers with U Should Not Be Doing That) and their latest album, Faith Crisis Pt. 1, was named one of The Music’s Top Albums of 2024.

In October, Middle Kids hit the triple j studio for a tender take on the Oasis classic, Champagne Supernova, for Like A Version. Hannah Joy revealed that Oasis are longtime inspirations for Middle Kids and have always made her feel cool. She also shared that Champagne Supernova was her mother’s favourite Oasis song.
