Mia Wray Announces Debut Album, 'Hi, It’s Nice To Meet Me'

A decade since she made her critically-acclaimed debut, Naarm/Melbourne-based musician Mia Wray has announced the release of her long-awaited debut album, hi, it’s nice to meet me.

Arriving on March 14th, 2025, the announcement of the album comes paired with Wray’s latest single, the similarly-titled Nice To Meet Me, which was co-written with G Flip and sets the scene for her larger body of work.

The track also plays into the theme of the title, narrating the story of Wray meeting her true self for the first time, the dissolution of a long-term relationship, and her coming to terms with, and ultimately embracing, being queer.

“I told [G Flip and producer Aidan Hogg] the story; I was with my partner and I met this girl.,” she recalls. ““She was just the cherry on top, the final realisation that something was really knocking at the door for me. I needed to answer it.

“I remember telling them that when I broke up with my boyfriend, we literally had a house on a hill. It was my uncle’s place in Warrandyte. We were renting it. I remember a couple of days after the break-up, I’m trying to be there for him but also, for me, being there was very upsetting as well.

“You’re trying to be supportive, but you’re not helping because you’re a constant reminder of sadness,” she adds. “I remember being like, ‘I just need to pack some bags and go,’ I remember kissing him for the last time — I knew it was the last time, that was very intense. There was a really long dirt road driveway in the middle of the bush; I remember seeing him in the rearview mirror, just standing outside the house on the hill.”

This story is just one of the many that encapsulate the journey of Wray’s self-discovery that is explored on the new album.

Utilising her kaleidoscopic mix of indie folk, soulful rhythms, and club-ready pop energy, the record explores the chaotic experience of meeting one's true self for the first time and embracing it. For Wray, the record was a way to capture those feelings and crystallise them via music.

“It’s all a bit of a blur, the whole realising that I was probably queer,” she remembers. “The first thing I had in my notes was that I felt like I was saying hello to myself for the first time in a really long time. ‘Hi, it’s nice to meet me’ just kept coming up in my brain as a theme.

“I thought it was cool and unique, I hadn’t really seen that around a lot. It felt right. It was a real slap in the face like, ‘Oh that’s who I am, that makes sense…’”
