"Our grief and confusion at this time are little compared to what Andrew’s family will be feeling – our hearts and prayers go out to them.

"Andrew is survived by his son Harvey, fiancée Fiona Docker and brother Stuart."

According to The Daily Telegraph, Smith suffered the heart attack while in his car and passed away later after being treated by an ambulance.

Mental As Anything were currently touring in support of the 40th anniversary of their debut album, Get Wet, and had last performed at the Band Together music festival in Wolumla this past weekend.

Since the release of Get Wet in November 1979, Mental As Anything have had 25 top 40 singles in the country, a record the band owned until the mid '90s. They also enjoyed international success with 1985's Live It Up (written by Smith) which charted at #1 in Scandinavia, #3 in the UK and #6 in Germany.

Late last year Smith led the band in a triumphant set on the Meredith Music Festival stage (fellow Mentals singer Martin Plaza was absent due to illness). The band were deemed "Boot-worthy", the event's biggest honour with The Music reviewer Bryget Chrisfield saying, "We feel like we've been transported into Chelsea Heights Hotel, look around surprised by how many youngsters know every word and then, there it is! The Nips Are Getting Bigger receives the best audience response of the weekend so far and it's boots ahoy!"

As well as his work with Mental As Anything, the ARIA Hall Of Famer developed a successful media persona, appearing on popular local shows including Countdown, Hey Hey It's Saturday and Spicks And Specks.
