BREAKING: 'We've got no choice,' Premier announced this afternoon.

Metropolitan Melbourne will re-enter six weeks of lockdown of Stage 3 restrictions, following an announcement from Premier Daniel Andrews today.

Andrews announced that the lockdown will be in place from 11.59pm on Wednesday.

He has confirmed that once again there will only be four reasons for residents to leave their home; for work and school, care or caregiving, exercise and shopping for food and supplies.

"We've got no choice but to take these very, very difficult steps," Andrews said.

It has been confirmed that hospitality venues will be required to return to takeaway only service.

"Stage 3 means that those venues that had been cautiously opening up will have to go back to takeaway service only," Andrews said.

"Other businesses that had opened will have to close. I know and understand how significant that will be. I know and understand that there will be a big job for us to continue providing support.

"The responsible ministers will have more to say soon about further business support and I’ll be having further conversations with the Prime Minister about some of the very special needs that Victorian businesses are going to need met over these coming weeks and months."
