Ten years on, the West Australian rockers are looking back at their enduring debut
Ten years after the release of seminal debut album Themata, West Australian prog-rock vets Karnivool would be unrecognisable to their younger selves, having charted an ascendant course around the world over the past decade. But, now, they're looking to pause a moment and take stock of all that has come before with the announcement of national tour in celebration of Themata's 10th birthday.
It may be hard to believe that a full 10 years as passed since the band unleashed their debut, given their meticulous approach to crafting — and thus glacial pace in releasing — their albums, Themata itself yielding a handful of broadly recognisable tunes such as L1FEL1KE, Shutterspeed, radio single Roquefort and, of course, the blistering title track.
All of these cuts, as well as the rest of the album's varied aural journeys, will be up for free-flowing consumption from Thursday, 30 April, when the band kick off their anniversary tour at the University of Wollongong. Consequently, they'll hit Newcastle (Panthers, 1 May), Sydney (Metro, 2 May), Byron Bay (The Northern, 7 May), Coolangatta (The Coolangatta Hotel, 8 May), Brisbane (The Triffid, 9 May), Melbourne (The Corner Hotel, 12 May), Traralgon (Kay Street, 15 May), Geelong (Wool Exchange, 16 May), Adelaide (The Gov, 19 May), Darwin (Discovery, 21 May) and cap it all off with a triumphant homecoming in Perth, at Metro City, on Friday, 22 May.
