Desert Pea Media are doing their best to change that

If you haven't heard of the initiative Desert Pea Media, it's probably about time you had. These guys are exposing and encouraging hip hop with the younger indigenous community and The Lulu Review had a chat with them in the latest installment.

DPM gives the indigenous youth the chance to showcase their musical talent - they currently have 49 clips on their YouTube channel showcasing some very talented youngsters. Musical director and in-house producer Roc West said it's important for these kids to tell the stories of their heritage.

"The bottom line is that a lot of indigenous history still is not taught at all in any of the schools in Australia," he said.

A number of the youth write their songs based around the stories they're told from their elders.

"For the kids to be able to hear how it was, you know even forty, fifty years ago from an elder in the community is always something amazing to see."
