More CYRIL More CYRIL

Australian DJ and viral TikTok sensation CYRIL has revealed that he “hated” himself for capitalising on social media trends rather than making music he truly enjoys.

CYRIL opened up about his feelings towards his own music in a recent chat on the Born Funny podcast with Jimmy & Nath.

During the conversation, CYRIL admitted that he “hates” his latest hit, a remix of The La’s 1980 song, There She Goes, and confirmed that he’s walking away from his TikTok style of music. He also revealed that next month, he’s heading to Los Angeles to undergo a rebrand and work on a “full original pop album” with some impressive figures.

“The success was dying down in a way, on TikTok and stuff,” he began. “I could’ve kept going and getting the same results, but it just fucking sells your soul, doesn’t it?”

Telling Jimmy and Nath that he “got sick of” making music for TikTok, citing his hit remixes of The Sound of Silence, Stumblin’ In, and There She Goes, as songs he needs to “stop making.”

He continued, “Once There She Goes came out — I fucking hate that so much. I like the original, but don’t like my remix. When I heard that blow up and heard every fucking reel everywhere, I’m like, ‘I’m going to get so much hate for this’ … I just hated myself for it.

“It was time where I was like, you know what, I’m going to get everything off Instagram and do a whole new rebranding … and just try and promote good club music for shows … from next month I’ll be in LA writing a full original pop album, with guys who’ve worked with Justin Bieber.”

Back in April, CYRIL dropped his first original release, Tears Dry Tonight, a single starring crooner James Blunt. Could it be hinting at the type of music he wants to continue making?

Last year, CYRIL was nominated for two ARIA Awards for Stumblin’ In—Best Dance Release and Song of the Year—and recently took home Song of the Year at Germany’s Radio Regenbogen Awards.

In February, Spotify revealed that he dominated the Australian Music Global Impact List, which tracked the most successful songs of 2024.

CYRIL topped the list with his remix of The Sound Of Silence, while two of his other songs cracked the Top 30, including The Door (remixing Teddy Swims) and Fall At Your Feet (remixing Crowded House) featuring Dean Lewis, which made it to #18 and #24, respectively.

He said of the achievement, “I’m incredibly honoured to have three tracks featured on the Spotify Global Impact List, including a No.1 spot, alongside so many talented artists. It makes me proud that my music can show the world that Australians aren’t here to f*** spiders.”
