The Human Rights Arts & Film Festival has released their full program for 2016, aiming to showcase the personal tales of a variety of people through arts events, short films and forums. The festival will open with the Australian premiere of the film Chasing Asylum on 5 May in Melbourne, before it tours nationally.
Academy Award-winning Australian Eva Orner directed Chasing Asylum, following the poignant and personal story of real asylum seekers and their struggles. The film will contain never-before-seen footage of offshore detention centres on Nauru and Manus Island.
Many other films in the festival follow similar paths as Chasing Asylum as their themes surround change or moving from country to country in strife. The festival will close with the Australian premiere of the 2016 Sundance Award-winning The Bad Kids addressing poverty in America.
The festival will run from 5-19 May in Melbourne, 24-28 May in Sydney, 24-26 May in Brisbane, 3-5 of June in Canberra, 30 May to 1 June in Perth, 30-31 May in Alice Springs and 6-8 June in Darwin.
