When Hannah Gadsby got nominated for an Emmy Award in the same category as Beyonce, she felt pretty confident that she wasn't going to win.

In September last year when it was announced that the Australian comedian had in fact taken out the award for Outstanding Writing For A Variety Special for her hit show Nanette she was suitably surprised.

This week, Gadsby appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and shared that she was actually in the middle of performing her show Douglas to a live audience when the result came through.

"I'd assumed I wasn't going to win," she explained during the interview.

"It was an easy lead-up... because Beyonce. I'm not Taylor Swift. It's Beyonce, and that was an incredible piece of work she made so I was comfortable with not winning."

Gadsby goes on to explain that it was decided that when the result came through her producer would put a slide on the screen behind to inform both Gadsby and the crowd that she hadn't won. Of course, that was not the case and instead "Hannah Won An Emmy!!!!" appeared instead, with the audience realising before Gadsby had the chance to.
