"I mean, it was fuckin’ expensive, man..."
Stadium rock favourites the Foo Fighters have admitted the process behind their Sonic Highways HBO documentary series wasn't as easy as you might imagine.
In a recent interview with The Music's Bryget Chrisfield, drummer Taylor Hawkins confessed the band sought out financial help from their label, as well as playing corporate gigs to pay for Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways.
"We went to HBO and we were like, ‘Yeah, we wanna do this so, yeah! It’s gonna cost about, you know, ten million dollars. So are you cool with that?’ They’re like, ‘Well, yeah, that’s fine, but, uh, we’re not paying for it [laughs]’. I mean, it was fuckin’ expensive, man..." Hawkins said.
"We got a little bit of help from, you know, the folks, the label and stuff, but that’s why we went to Mexico City for those two shows and that’s why we did a show in Dover – where was that? We did some show then we did a coupla little, you know, corporate shows and stuff literally to pay for this series. We had make money to pay for it, which is fine."
In another interview on theMusic.com.au, Hawkins pondered whether the series would be welcomed by the public.
"I mean, I dunno, maybe some people will go, ‘[In douchebag voice] Oh, wow! Foo Fighters have an HBO series. Oh, what, are they fuckin’ movie stars now?’ I mean, who knows? Some people will think that, you know. We’re obviously not the underdogs anymore necessarily."
The Dave Grohl-directed, eight-part doco series airs locally on the GO! channel at 4:30pm on Saturdays.
