Bluesfest's Juke Joint Returns, Stacks Of Blues Acts Added

5 February 2014 | 12:02 pm | Dan Condon

This is one for the blues lovers.

More Bluesfest More Bluesfest

Ask any Bluesfest veteran about their favourite memories of the past 25 years of the festival and there's little doubt that, at some stage, they'll tell you about the Juke Joint.

It was a place where the roughest and gruffest blues shows happened; the likes of RL Burnside, Hat Fitz and Johnny Green's Blues Cowboys all delivering unforgettable sets inside and in 2014 it is making its return to Bluesfest as a purely blues and roots focused stage.

As such, today's announcement of new acts will all be appearing on the newly announced seventh stage, though there are more to be announced:

Here are the new announcements:

Garland Jeffreys, Backsliders, Eugene “Hideaway” Bridges, Hat Fitz & Cara, Joanne Shaw Taylor , Ray Beadle Band, The Mojo Webb Band, Shaun Kirk, Claude Hay, Genevieve Chadwick, Daniel Champagne, Marshall OKell and the Pride

Here's how it sounds:

Here's what we reckon:

GARLAND JEFFREYS

An old mate of Lou Reed and John Cale's from the old days in New York City, Garland Jeffreys has had one hell of a career playing blues, reggae and soul music. His Wild In The Streets single from 1973 is iconic, particularly in the skate community, and has been covered by a whole stack of punks over the years. But that's just one tiny bit of a long and storied career he will share with us at Bluesfest.

BACKSLIDERS

You can't talk Australian blues without mentioning this supergroup of some of the best blues players the country has ever produced. Backsliders have been hard at it for close to three decades now, yet still manage to sound like one of the most vital blues acts in the country. Dom Turner, Rob Hirst and Ian Collard will produce the kind of blues jam that'll ensure your faith in the genre stays alive.

HAT FITZ & CARA

How many Bluesfests have you been to? There's not many of you who will be able to say you've been to as many as Hat Fitz as this year he will play the event for the 22nd time in a row. We can't say for sure, but we're pretty certain that he doesn't keep getting booked out of routine – it's because he's truly one of the best blues acts we have. He teams up with his partner Cara again for Bluesfest 2014 as they explore blues and Celtic styles like only they can.

EUGENE “HIDEAWAY” BRIDGES

The man loves Australia, what can you say? A frequent visitor to our shores, Eugene “Hideaway” Bridges plays a polished but soulful brand of electric blues that aims to – and always succeeds in – getting people up on the dancefloor and grooving away those blues. His return to Bluesfest

JOANNE SHAW TAYLOR

Just another of the prodigiously talented guitarists Bluesfest brings out for their 2014 event, Joanne Shaw Taylor will once again blow us away with her stunning guitar chops and her gritty, impassioned blues vocal. She's still only young, but is a veritable veteran after having been picked up as a 16 year old guitar goddess around a decade ago. Another powerful woman musician who'll stick it to the blokes this year.

RAY BEADLE BAND

Often considered to be one of the best blues guitarists in the country, Ray Beadle will match it with the best of them when Bluesfest 2014 hits Northern New South Wales. Years of slogging it out in pubs, on the road and in the studio have done wonders for a man who was already a ludicrously gifted guitarist and the secret of just how good he is gets that little bit closer to being unveiled at Bluesfest this year.

THE MOJO WEBB BAND

Hailing from Brisbane, Mojo Webb and his band are one of the hardest working blues acts around and it shows in just about every element of their performance. Mojo is one hell of a guitarist and has a kind of gruff vocal that sets him apart from plenty of his contemporaries. He surrounds himself with great players who work together so very well and it all comes together in a hell of a show that will go down a treat yet again at Bluesfest 2014.

Other Bluesfest acts who have been locked into performing at the Juke Joint include The Charlie Musselwhite Blues Band, North Mississippi All Stars, Music Maker Relief Foundation featuring Pat Wilder, Cool John Ferguson and Little Freddie King, Chain, The Paladins, Eric Bibb, CW Stoneking, Glenn Cardier, Devon Allman, Valerie June, Candye Kane, Nikki Hill and Seth Lakeman!
