In the ultimate gift this festive season, Amy Shark has reminded us what Christmas is all about: being with your family.
The I Said Hi singer shared a new video on Facebook where she revealed, "For the past 5 weeks I’ve been a full-time carer for my nan," which is pretty amazing for a global superstar to stop everything and do.
She added, "we had some extremely hard days. My nan is 95 now and has played a very big role in my life. I definitely feel different after this, not even sure how I feel. Any Carers out there I have so much respect for you, one of the hardest jobs in the world".
The video is filled with bits and pieces of footage from Shark's phone, including serving her nan breakfast and more meals, to her nan's delight; her nan looking for knitting needles and asking her granddaughter, "you're going to learn to knit, aren't you?"; a whistling bird which repeatedly gets on Shark's nerves, and Shark's music playing on the radio in her nan's house. As well as taking on the hardest job in the world, Amy Shark gave us another reason to celebrate the festive season by releasing her take on Coldplay's Christmas Lights last month, which made our 10 Best Australian Christmas Songs Of 2022.
Collaborating with Amazon to bring us an exclusive festive cover, Shark stays true to her indie-pop roots and takes the song in a new direction, away from the original piano ballad that was released 12 years ago to an easy-going pop hit. Swooping synths, rhythmic guitars and a consistent thumping beat lay the bed for Shark’s silky vocals to shine.
The Adore singer took to Instagram to celebrate the release of the Christmas song, saying, “I know it’s only November… but I covered ‘Christmas lights’ by Coldplay for Amazon Music. It's a bit melancholy, but that’s me.”
Earlier this year, Shark went on a mammoth 42-date tour across regional Australia. “I’m the happiest when I’m on stage performing, and I can’t wait to travel further into Australia, where I’ve never been before, to explore some of these towns and meet everyone; it’s going to be a fun one,” she shared.
“I don't know when I'll get the chance to do a huge Australian run like this again, so if I'm coming to your town, you are mine that night! No excuses.”
