Canadian singer-songwriter and Ottawa native Alanis Morissette has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Ottawa.

The You Oughta Know singer received the honorary doctorate for her contributions to music, which have resulted in seven Grammy Awards, 60 million records sold globally, ten albums, and a theatre production of her 1995 breakthrough album, Jagged Little Pill.

In addition to her lifelong career in music (and some experience in acting), Morissette was also recognised with an honorary doctorate for her activism and advocacy.

Throughout her life, Morissette has shown support for female empowerment, as well as spiritual, psychological, and physical wellness, including addiction and trauma recovery, mental illnesses, and the advancement of a more holistic approach to children’s education.

Morissette has consistently facilitated messaging through various platforms, including performance, writing, interviews, teaching, workshops, keynotes, and public speaking.

The singer has supported many causes throughout her career, including NEDA, NAMI, RAINN, Equality Now, SafePlace International, and Postpartum Support International. In December 2024, she was presented with the Global Tolerance Award at a United Nations ceremony.

She received the award for “promoting tolerance through the arts,” thanks to her performances in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, the Great Jubilee Concert for a Debt-Free World in Rome, and a cultural exchange visit to Cuba in 1998.

Reacting to being awarded an honorary doctorate from her home state’s university, Morissette shared photos of herself in a graduation gown on Instagram and captioned the post, “allowing this PhD from @uottawa to mark the decades of study and research and clinical trainings and channeling and obsession about our human condition(s). an honor and a true gift and privilege.”

The University of Ottawa added, “We were very pleased to present Ottawa native Alanis Morissette with her honorary doctorate on our campus on Saturday at the Faculty of @uottawa_arts!

“This distinction highlights her exceptional music career and her commitment to women’s empowerment as well as physical, psychological and spiritual integrity.

Morissette’s most recent album, the storm before the calm, was released in June 2022. A meditative album, it showcased the rock and roll singer’s interest in ambient music. The record followed 2020’s Such Pretty Forks In The Road, her first album in eight years.
