Taylor Swift has broken another world record with her insane popularity – her epic cinema release Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is now both the highest-grossing concert film of all-time and the highest-grossing documentary.
Produced in-house by Swift and Silent House Productions, the popstar released the film on October 13, 2023. It’s a "cinematic rendering” of the titular tour, weaved into a tight two hours and 49 minutes of pure pop spectacle. It opened in more than 8,500 cinemas across the world, with many of its initial showings selling out within minutes.
Critics lauded The Eras Tour as one of the best concert films of all time, scoring a near-perfect 99 percent on Rotten Tomatoes with a consensus that dubs it “a smoothly directed, impeccably performed documentary capturing the concert event of the year”. It went on to be nominated for Best Music Documentary at the 2023 Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards, and earned a Cinematic And Box Office Achievement at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. It’s also been nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the upcoming 2024 Astra Film Awards.
In a press release shared this week by AMC Theatres (who distributed the film in the US), it was confirmed that The Eras Tour is now the highest-earning concert film and documentary ever released, netting more than $261.6 million USD ($388.8 million AUD) at the global box office. It breaks the record previously held by Michael Jackson’s 2009 pic This Is It, which had pulled in $261.2 million ($388.3 million) at the end of its run.
Swift has her Chinese fans to thank for the record-breaking sweep – The Eras Tour launched in Chinese cinemas on December 31, and drew in $8.7 million from its first-week screenings.
In a statement, Adam Aron – chairman & CEO of AMC Entertainment – said of this monumental milestone: “On behalf of all of us at AMC Theatres, I send my congratulations and eternal gratitude to Taylor Swift for her remarkable and record-setting box office performance with Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film. Her spectacular performance delighted fans around the world and serves as another strong reminder about the power of extraordinary filmmaking and magic of movie [theatres].”

The namesake Eras tour itself is ongoing, with its Australian leg kicking off next month. To that end, Swift recently released her Taylor’s Version redux of 1989, which in a glowing review for The Music, Tione Zylstra said could be seen as “the mature older sister to 1989 (stolen version)”.
Meanwhile, last month saw Nova 100 launch a radio station dedicated solely to Swift, playing her hits 24/7.
