Sad news came out of Brisbane today: the beloved record store Jet Black Cat Music announced its closure.
Located on the corner of Thomas and Vulture Streets in Brisbane’s West End, the brick-and-mortar store will close down next month, but the owners said there are plans to shapeshift and take on a “new form.“ Despite the sad news, the store plans to continue to grow into a “new life” that spotlights great music, hosts events, and supports touring.
Earlier this year, the owners opened up about 2024 being the record store’s “most challenging yet” as a small business.
Jet Black Cat Music has hosted many incredible local and international acts, from Courtney Barnett to Weyes Blood to Angie McMahon and Julia Jacklin to Sharon Van Etten, Charli XCX, Sampa The Great, Marlon Williams, and stacks more.
The record store’s final day of regular trading will be Saturday, 28 December—late Christmas presents, anyone?—just before the store’s 14th birthday in January.
“This incarnation as a bricks and mortar indie record shop has given me (and I hope a few of you) some wonderful experiences, connections to great people and community and the biggest sweetheart of them all… music,” a post from Jet Black Cat Music’s owners reads.

“I’m eternally grateful to so many people who’ve contributed to the story and the beautiful thing we’ve collectively grown together and the local support in 4101. People make places great and JBCM and all that it embodies is a true testament to that, something I feel deeply proud of. The biggest loves of my life have walked through those doors and the most memorable and fun times have been had within those walls. THANK YOU!”
