It has been over 40 years since alternative and theatrical Melbourne band Schism graced the stage. On Friday 2 May 2025, Schism return as a LIVE act in their new form as ‘Schism 21C’ to play tracks off their new album, ‘Only The Shell Remains’.
Schism 21C is the reboot of early 1980’s Melbourne alternative band Schism who were a major indie unsigned force as part of Melbourne’s alternative music scene, packing out venues with their highly visual and theatrical headline shows. They also shared the stage with The Birthday Party, Hunters and Collectors, INXS, Dead Can Dance, Beargarden, Real Life, and Pseudo Echo at venues such as The Crystal Ballroom, Macys, The Jump Club and The Venue at Earls Court.
Their 1982 self- titled cassette album garnered considerable interest in indie stores and airplay on 3RRR and 3PBS, as well as being exported to Japan and Germany.
Jumping ahead 40 years to the 2020’s, founding Schism members Gordon ‘Gordo’ Graham (drummer, keyboards, producer) and Simon ‘Circus’ Rashleigh (lead vocals, synths/co- producer, major Schism songwriter) reformed as a duo experimenting with the original early 1980’s recordings of Schism. These electronic and post-punk-prog era pieces were turned into midi code and then reimagined into new digital revitalised works with a more sophisticated and darker edge.
The Live unveiling of the new Schism 21C album at Odeon Richmond will reveal a body of work that is musically varied across the genres of darkwave, electronica, post-punk, goth prog, synthwave and post-punk-prog in a sonically rich landscape.
Schism 21C LIVE at Odeon Richmond with support ‘Keith Stone – The Creature from Outer Bass’ on Friday 2 May.
