"There is a loose theme based around observing and comprehending the cycle of life on a day to day basis."
Progressive metal band Voyager has been kicking around since 1999, with their current guitarist, Scott Kay, joining in 2010. Kay suggests that since the band's advent, Voyager "has travelled through many musical styles and line-up iterations", yet they still maintain a "cult-like following".
Kay's attitude to perfection may be an indicator as to why the band has stuck around for as long as it has, not only surviving the line-up changes but thriving - "I think perfection is sometimes viewed as simply playing the correct notes in time, and nothing else. But to me, perfection includes expression and dynamics too. If the take doesn't have any vibe, it's not perfect, is it?"
Fans clearly continue to appreciate Voyager's vibe too, as the Perth natives are in the midst of dropping their latest album, Ghost Mile. Of the album, Kay explains: "There is a loose theme based around observing and comprehending the cycle of life on a day to day basis, whether it is the mundane or the profound." The album's tracks are also designed to replicate the cycle of life when listened to in succession, as the title track, Ascension, "is the morning", and the final track, As The City Takes The Night, "is the night, obviously".
Kay admits that it might be a bit of a challenge for songs like Ghost Mile - the album's title track that "has this impact and mood that takes you through so many emotions" - to have the same impact on stage as they do on the album.
"We want these songs to have as much impact live as they have on record, and considering how good the mix is, that is no easy feat."
