PREMIERE: The Stress Of Leisure's Kitchens Rule In Super-Fun Video For 'I Wanna Be Adult'

Ah, the fine art of cooking for other people and then having them judge you for it.

Brisbane indie-rockers The Stress Of Leisure tackle the lunacy of being an adult — especially those who would ever want to take part in a cooking reality show — in their synth-driven new single and video, proudly premiering today on theMusic.com.au.

The first single off Eruption Bounce, the band's sixth studio album, I Wanna Be Adult encapsulates The Stress Of Leisure's affable demeanour and irreverent outlook, boasting winking lyricism, casually executed but undeniably catchy melodies and even some call-and-response gang vocals thrown in for good measure.

The band's professed desire to "be adult" is an evidently tongue-in-cheek one, with co-vocalist Ian Powne crowing, "Think I'll get a house, think I'll get in debt… but not yet" as well as reflecting on the need to erase his online history and "face reality". Later, the members take turns introducing themselves in a comedic spoken interlude ("Hi, my name is Pascalle; I play synthesizers, and I want to be the CEO of my own self!" — don't we all?).

The clip was filmed by Powne and Phil Usher, and portrays a parody of My Kitchen Rules as the contestants/members take turns cooking for each other and then being judged for it by their peers (man, when you think about it, that show's really kind of mean-spirited). It also features a cameo from a cat named Charlie, which instantly earns the whole exercise extra bonus points.

It's all a glorious amount of fun that takes the mickey out of self-serious grown-ups of all stripes, and it's an absolute winner from one of Queensland's deeply underrated musical gems.

Eruption Bounce — which Powne describes as "a yearning for positivity, but essentially more songs about buildings, food AND the internet" — is out now through Plus One Records.

The Stress Of Leisure have a couple of shows at home coming up in the near future, including a support slot for Shonen Knife, with I Heart Hiroshima, at The Zoo on 21 September, before launching their new album with a headline outing at The Foundry on 1 October (with Moody Beach and The Gametes).
