SINGLE PREMIERE: Birdhouse - Time Traveller

Melbourne indie-punk-rock four-piece Birdhouse have unveiled their impassioned new track Time Traveller, proudly premiering on theMusic.com.au today.

Taking a slightly heavier, more urgent and heartfelt bent than we've seen in earlier releases such as the more restrained Sweet and Bitter, Time Traveller does a solid job of capturing the underlying anger that the members say informed the song's incubation.

Vocalist Danny Smith — who laid the foundations for the song with guitarist Nick Tamiakis before the full band brought it to life together — describes the track as "a rollicking, punchy song about rage, frustrations and confusion across time", a theme that carries to the song's title.

"The track's name came mainly from the off-beat, dragging verse riff," Smith said. "That made us think of being dragged through years."

"The repeated chorus line, 'Marks on the heart' and the disjointed anger in the verses is meant to suggest this rage is something that has emotional consequences, no matter when you're living," Tamiakis added.

Heavy themes aside, though, the track is — in drummer Jamie O'Sullivan's words — "just something to punk out to", and it certainly hits the mark as far as that's concerned.

Birdhouse have a spot coming up at Need A Reason Fest at the Evelyn Hotel, Fitzroy, on Sunday 16 April.
