Why She's The Driver Gave Their Songs A 'Kick Up The Butt'

"It changed a bit over the course of recording."

More She's The Driver More She's The Driver

She's The Driver's Sean Miljoen decided that when it came to the band's latest single, it was time for a no-nonsense approach to songwriting: "Sifting through all the everyday bollocks you see, hear, read, to find something real; that inspired me to write the line, 'In the light of day, everything's a novelty.'"

The new release, Novelty, follows the sound that's arisen since the formation of the trio's current line-up. "We did a few albums as a guitar/drum fuzz rock two-piece, but about 18 months ago our friend Joe (Golotta) joined us on bass." Miljoen continues, "We wrote the song at our studio, and it changed a bit over the course of recording. After living with the demo for a while, it needed a bit of a kick up the butt!" The addition of Galotta also gave way to a freer recording style, but Miljoen still has a sense of precision.

"We recorded this single at our own studio, because it's very convenient!" says Miljoen. "It was mixed by Woody Annison at Red Door in Collingwood. We definitely go for feeling and vibe when deciding on a take. Then I stew on it 100 times over, wondering if it's the perfect one!" And when it gets too much? "I drink enough beer to make me want to listen to myself again."

After the official release of Novelty, Miljoen and co are gearing up for the next big step for the band. "We have a finished ten-track album, ready to be released when things go back to normal after the Christmas and festival season," he says. "That's due out early next year."
