The Sydney-based musician makes a powerful mark ahead of the release of her debut album, In Feelings, out October 9th..
Over the last few years, it's become apparent that Sydney musician Lisa Caruso knows the cathartic qualities of songwriting. She's blossomed into one of the country's most exciting emerging artists, ushered there by a knack for storytelling that really unearths her stories and experiences from the past with an emotional potency that makes every single one of her tracks a therapeutic listen; intimate and emotionally complex, as she strips away the layers and puts vulnerable and empowering songwriting at the forefront of her work.
With every single she's put out over the last two years - 2018's Shake Baby Shake, last year's A Holiday and its follow-ups Borrow My Body and Dream Lover - this vulnerability has been at the core in one way or another, whether it be brooding and dark as she explores the low-lights and relishes in its accompanying emotions, or quite the opposite, as she channels the euphoria of highs in a way that creeps into her sound.
Today, we premiere a single that may sound like its in the former - dark, brooding, edgy - but is quite empowering and hand-gripping, with To Call You Mine being one of Lisa's most brilliant pieces of work to date. Premiering on Pilerats today ahead of its greater release later this week, To Call You Mine is the final snapshot of Lisa Caruso's debut album expected later this year, and what a snapshot it is. It's cathartic and powerful, really streamlining those aforementioned qualities to her work that this time around, feel almost as upfront and present than ever.
Sound-wise, there's a hint of subtle euphoria-like emotion present through her vocal; an uplifting and powerful cry amongst a waterfall of crunchy rock guitar and a percussive pace that keeps it all together, and musically, gives the single a dark and sombre touch that really reflects its themes. "There's no sleeping in on this one," she says on the single. "It's the final single to share before my album drops, and I think it's also a pretty decent sonic summary of how 2020 has felt so far..."
