Have You Heard: Hyfrydol

18 July 2012 | 3:02 pm | Staff Writer

We caught Hyfrydol for a couple of questions.

What's the song about?
Kat Wells, vocals/organ/violin: General disappointment in people (not the happiest of singles).

Is this track from a forthcoming/existing release?
We're recording an album a little later in the year, so this will probably go on that.

How long did it take to write/record?
It was recorded over two days at Pots And Pans studio in Hawthorn with the excellent Joe Hammond. It was written over about four months… I started writing on guitar, then finished on piano and worked at it gradually.

What was inspiring you during the song's writing and recording?
As the topic of the song is disappointment, I had to accumulate enough deeply disappointing experiences over some months to finish it. I have a style of writing where in order to work on a song, I have to find myself in exactly the same emotional state as when I started the song, or else it all becomes fragmented and loses cohesion. Similar to when you lose your keys when you're drunk, and only find them when you're drunk again.

We'll like this song if we like…
Pop harmonies, weird time signatures, pretty chord progressions, raw/gnarly/cathartic lyrics.

Do you play it differently live?
When playing it live we extend it a little. But of course the experience of seeing us play it live is vastly different to just listening because we all have a kind of juggernaut velocity conviction when we play, which makes for a pretty dramatic live show.

Will you be launching it?
Yes! The Toff, tonight (Wednesday 18 July), with Albert Salt, Great Earthquake and The Townhouses DJs supporting!
