On Top Of The World

It's time to move on according to Client Liaison.

More Client Liaison More Client Liaison

The eclectic synth-pop duo have been touring the country consistently over the last year, and have mastered the ‘80s retro style in their live performances. Putting together an EP, therefore, seemed like a natural way forward for the gentlemen.

“Everyone would always hound us about when we’d have a longer, and more formal release, so I guess it’s a bit of a relief really,” Miller begins, “A lot of it was like feeling as though some songs, like Feeling At The End Of The Earth, didn’t get a proper release, so we wanted them on a longer release, and we picked a couple of newer songs that we’re really excited about, and then a couple of older songs too. We tried to create a different palette for each song. Early ‘90s, disco, funk, ballad, pop-rock kind of stuff. It’s nice to put some of the old tracks and new ones together into a longer format than what we usually do, and it’s given us time to spend tweaking the live show, which is great, and now we can start thinking about our next set of recordings, and it’s a clean slate for us. We’re still very young, so it’s a great thing to experience. It’s the road of a musician, and we’re just happy to be doing it.”

The duo have already released a single and accompanying music video in Queen. Their vision for the clip was precise and Miller manages to explain it perfectly for those finding it all too familiar to see.

“We were referencing that point in time where a band would be commissioned to the soundtrack of a Hollywood feature film, or any film for that matter, and we drew this thing that was in vogue at the time where they just film the band, usually performing, and then they’d slice in footage from the feature film. Examples like Aerosmith’s Don’t Want To Miss A Thing – you’ve got them singing, then footage of Bruce Willis cut in there. That tradition was what we wanted. All in all it’s quite soft and sentimental, it’s not in your face and outrageous.”

Miller has mentioned in the past that Bob Hawke sculling a beer was the moment in Australian history that has most influenced his music, and as such, many of Client Liaison’s tracks have had an inherent sense of Australiana about them, but now, the guys are ready to move beyond that. “We still run with those themes in some respects – we’ve got politicians speaking over the top of bits and pieces – but we’re interested in other things as well. For the past two years we’ve been answering questions about the ‘80s and Australia, so we don’t talk about that anymore. We’ve been working on this theme of us being Australian diplomats overseas. We’re taking our outlook of Australia and flying the flag abroad.”
