"We are the crew of an ancient ship, we've stumbled upon a mysterious island, and we've tumbled into now, as a band."
Picture four dudes posing in red, open, (far too small) marching band jackets, holding instruments. One is in a kilt. Two oddly dressed dames are off to the side, while a manic-looking bearded fellow in the forefront is wearing a full army trench coat and helmet, holding a grenade. This is 8FootFelix, a ska, funk and gypsy blues band sprung from the bohemian arts community of Melbourne's inner north.
"We are the crew of an ancient ship, we've stumbled upon a mysterious island, and we've tumbled into now, as a band. We're on the run from boisterous forces," explains 'Captain' Will Tait (the one holding the grenade in their press photo).
They recorded their album Mad Isle in Sing Sing Studios after a few years of performing experience at festivals such as Burning Man (USA), Rainbow Serpent, Bushweek and Psyfari."There was a sense that the history [of Sing Sing Studios] would serve us well. It did. There's a family feel, and they are top-notch crew, dedicated to the birthing of fine music," explains Tait. "These songs have all splashed into being in the jam room, and then jumped up for some heavy duty wrangling with the crowds. Nothing else could represent. The Biggalong and The Whales hale from sea-shanty beginnings, Underworld emerging when we explored Days Of The Dead and discovered Teddy on guitar."
